The streets cannot be controlled – Oct 14th
We will continue to fight for a free and sovereign Colombia.
Colombia, 14 October 2026.
Today, teachers, students, workers, peasants, women and young proletarians have once again taken to the streets of Colombia.
This is not an isolated incident; it is part of a global wave of protest that has spread from France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Brazil, Chile and Argentina. This demonstrates the strength of the working class when mobilised against property speculation and dispossession, as well as regressive fiscal austerity measures that defund education systems, undermine social protection and threaten to make the lives of millions of workers around the world even more miserable.
In Colombia, the regime led by Abelardo de la Espriella is proposing the same outdated solutions as always: macroeconomic adjustment, authoritarianism, and the suppression of social protest. However, their treachery has sparked a strong response from the protesters.
For this reason, the Social and Popular Mass Political Movement of Central-Eastern Colombia salutes and celebrates all those marching today. Mobilisation is legitimate and has brought about great changes in history.
The right is on the rise across the world, and our response is internationalist solidarity, organisation and struggle. In Brazil, the Bolsonaro clan is attempting a comeback, and people are already taking to the streets to say ‘never again’. In France and Spain, the lack of affordable housing is forcing a whole generation out of the cities, and the protests show no sign of abating. The Trump administration’s imperialist policies are aligning it with the far right in the region, which is plundering and repressing its working classes.
If oppression and exploitation know no borders, neither does resistance.
After just a few months in power, De la Espriella’s government has revealed its true reactionary colours: a far-right cabinet; handing over the state bureaucracy and substantial public funds to the same corrupt clans; the country’s backward-looking capitalist trade unions; opening up national territory to foreign troops; handing over natural resources to foreign capital; and authoritarianism reminiscent of gangsters, under which it seeks to discipline and repress social protest.
History is shaped by mobilisation, which is why we must not remain silent or stand idly by. They want to convince us that ‘austerity’ is inevitable, that protesting is a ‘nuisance’ and that we workers must pay for the crisis.
We will not take a step back. We must continue to take to the streets, organise the working class and strengthen our unity with teachers, students, workers, peasants, indigenous peoples, women’s organisations and LGBTQ+ groups. If division is the enemy’s weapon, then unity is ours.
Today marks the start of a period of struggle and mobilisation that will require everyone to make every effort necessary to defend and improve public education and universities, defend labour rights to all the working masses of the country, defend national sovereignty, consolidate comprehensive, people-centred agrarian reform, build a new productive structure to enable the country’s development and use the public funds generated by our social labour to serve the workers.
For a free and sovereign Colombia… Unity and struggle!
For a proletarian and popular solution to the nation’s crisis!
Unity and struggle!
Social and popular mass political movement of central-eastern Colombia!!!
PEOPLE’S CONGRESS BUILDING A COUNTRY FOR A DIGNIFIED LIFE!
